Psyche was a mortal princess of extraordinary beauty. When others saw her, they would say that not even Aphrodite could compete. To punish her, Aphrodite ordered her son Eros, the god of love, to make Psyche fall in love with the vilest creature. Eros agreed to do so but the moment he saw her, he was captivated by her beauty, pricking himself with his own arrow, and falling deeply in love with her.
Eros visited Psyche in secret, keeping his identity hidden, but Psyche becomes curious about her mysterious lover's true identity. For a chance at a glimpse of his face, she betrays Eros's trust, sending him fleeing into the night.
Psyche embarks on a quest to win back his love, enduring a series of trials set by Aphrodite. Sorting a mountain of seeds, filling a cask from treacherous waters with the help of an eagle, and descending into the Underworld for a drop of beauty from Persephone.
The Gods, watching these unjust trials, sent word to Eros of everything Psyche did for him. Their love prevailed and Psyche was granted immortality.
